In winter, you can accidentally bring lots of dirt and moisture at home on your shoes, resulting in messy floors.

While it's almost impossible to eliminate dirt completely, there are still a few things you can do to keep your floors clean.

Here are a few tips on how to avoid dirt and moisture at home in winter.

Multi-Layered Doormat System

Set up a multi-layered doormat system. Place an outdoor scraper mat followed by an absorbent indoor mat.

This combination is effective in removing various layers of dirt and moisture.

Invest in Boot Trays with Grates

Consider boot trays with grates or elevated racks.

These trays allow melting snow and dirt to fall through, keeping your shoes above any mess.

Brush Off Snow in Two Steps

When dealing with heavy snow, brush off excess snow in two steps. First, stomp your feet to shake off loose snow.

Then, use a snow brush or a designated snow-removal tool to clear remaining snow.

Use a Shoe Brush

Keep a sturdy shoe brush near the entrance.

Use it to scrub off stubborn mud or snow from the soles and sides of your shoes.

Drying Mats for Wet Shoes

Place drying mats or absorbent rugs near the entrance.

These mats absorb moisture, preventing it from spreading indoors.

Boot Scrapers at Entrances

Install boot scrapers at entrances. These can be standalone devices or integrated into the ground.

They are designed to scrape off tough mud and snow.

Shoe Tapping Stations

Set up designated shoe tapping stations with a rubber mat.

This allows for efficient snow removal and prevents excess moisture from entering your home.

Rotate Shoes

Have multiple pairs of winter shoes and rotate them.

Allowing wet shoes to thoroughly dry before wearing them again helps in maintaining cleanliness.

Designate Outdoor Shoe Cleaning Area

Designate a specific area outside for shoe cleaning.

It could be a small porch or a covered space where you can focus on cleaning your shoes before entering.

Consider Shoe Covers

In extreme conditions, consider using disposable shoe covers.

These are especially handy when you need to enter a clean indoor space quickly.

Regularly Clean Doormats

Clean and shake out your doormats regularly.

This ensures they maintain their effectiveness in trapping dirt and moisture.

Previously, we talked about cleaning carpets from sweet drinks.
