According to scientists, the results of which are presented on the SCA website, the color of the cup affects the perception of the taste of coffee.

The human brain correlates shades as follows:

  • Red and pink are associated with sweetness, combined with the aroma of caramel or candy. The same drink in a red cup will seem sweeter than in a mug of a different color.
  • Yellow is suitable for coffee with high acidity. Pairs with citrus and stone fruit flavors. For example, apricot, plum, peach.
  • Turquoise and green convey the freshness of the drink, emphasize citrus and berry sourness.
  • Black sets off the bitterness of milk or dark chocolate, nuts or bread.
  • White dishes are neutral. It makes coffee cleaner and lighter in taste. That is why in most establishments the dishes are in light shades.

You can experiment with the color of the cups, choose a shade to emphasize and enhance the taste of coffee or give preference to a win-win classic.

The weight of the dishes also matters. During the experiment, coffee in a heavier cup seemed to the subjects of better quality, richer and more expensive.

The volume of dishes is important, as these are world standards. In high-end establishments, drinks are prepared according to traditional recipes in compliance with strict proportions.

For example, for a classic cappuccino, take 300 ml of milk and 25–35 ml of espresso. If the size of the dishes is incorrect, the ratio of ingredients is disturbed and the taste of the drink changes.

Saucers and spoons often come with the cup. If you choose them separately, follow the size. The smallest ones are for espresso; those that have the diameter of an ordinary teaspoon are for cappuccino.

Dishes should match the style of the house. For example, unusual shapes and colors go well with modernity, a restrained design suits classics, handmade cups and saucers are used to create coziness.
