Curtains can frame your room and windows well - but only if you choose them correctly.

When your curtains are too long or too short, they can make your room look worse - it's just like a bad haircut.

Here are a few things you should keep in mind before choosing the length of your curtains.

Find out how high your walls are

First, measure from the top of your window or curtain rod down to where you want the curtain to end. This depends on your personal taste and the look you want.

You can make them long

If you want curtains that touch the floor, measure from the rod to the floor.

Make sure the curtain just barely touches the floor or has a slight "break," where it bunches up a tiny bit.

You can make them shorter, too

For curtains that end at the windowsill, measure from the rod to the sill.

If you want curtains to go a bit below the sill, add a few inches to the sill-length measurement.

Just above the floor

If you prefer curtains that hang above the floor, measure to a point above the floor, usually around 1-3 inches.

Find the best proportion

Try to avoid curtains that are too short, where they don't reach the floor, or too long, where they drag on the floor. This can look awkward.

Keep in mind that the style of curtains and the look you want can affect the length choice. Some people like a more formal, puddling look where curtains pool on the floor, while others prefer a clean and crisp look that just grazes the floor.
